In November 2015, a further visit was made to the Children's Surgical Centre. As previously, the trip was part sponsored by the BFIRST charity and I was accompanied by its new president, Mr Wee Lam, who specialises in upper limb reconstruction particularly after major trauma.
November is a pleasant time to visit Phnom Penh, with the heat and humidity relatively lower than at other times of the year. We were delighted to receive the same Cambodian welcome and hospitality as before and enjoyed catching up with our old friends from the clinic
The Ear Reconstruction Service
Ear reconstruction at the Children's Surgical Centre is now well established. Former patients returned for follow up appointments and new patients were seen in the specially convened microtia clinic. Several patients underwent surgery and others had procedures planned for my next trip.
Microtia Surgery in Cambodia
It is my view that surgery performed in Cambodia should meet the same standards we expect in the UK. For this reason, I am training Dr Davy Sok, ENT lead at the CSC, in aspects of microtia care that she is able to perform by herself. On my visits, the complex issues are dealt with together but Dr Davy takes the lead and in turn, trains the more junior members of her team.
